A High-Performance Platform for Mediaboard Built for Big Data, Automation and High Availability

Mediaboard helps companies monitor media mentions on a global scale. Brands like HBO, Coca-Cola, and more than two thousand others use its platform to plan PR activities strategically, based on reliable data insights. They connect with relevant journalists and create AI-powered press releases directly within the app.

Every day, Mediaboard processes hundreds of gigabytes of data in real time. This requires a robust infrastructure and modern approaches to guarantee both stability and security. That’s why Mediaboard entrusted the core of its IT infrastructure to MasterDC.

The Challenge

Mediaboard had been operating a self-managed cluster that struggled with more demanding workloads. Its internal team designed a new architecture that combined shared storage with local storage on each node. Replication between these storages would ensure high availability. The design also included automated processes, such as virtual machine management. Mediaboard needed a partner who cloud bring this vision to life.

“Finding a provider with the right expertise proved to be difficult. We considered global cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and GCP, but ran into issues with high costs and limited support. Local and some European providers didn’t meet our expectations in terms of service quality or knowledge depth. We only found the right fit at MasterDC,” explains Michal Danilák, CTO of Mediaboard.

What We Deliver for Mediaboard

Custom Virtualisation Platform

We built a tailor-made Proxmox cluster that gives Mediaboard higher performance and better visibility across its environment. “We wanted more freedom in how we configure and operate our infrastructure. The new cluster allows us to respond flexibly to changes. At the same time, we’ve managed to cut costs by tens of percent,” says Michal Danilák.

Performance, Availability & Flexibility

Some virtual machines use local NVMe storage for faster read/write speeds, with software-based replication to prevent data loss in case of outages. Other VMs run on Ceph shared storage, enabling seamless migration between nodes. The cluster can be further scaled using horizontal scaling.

Infrastructure Automation & Management

We set up Elasticsearch to enable fast searches across extensive archival data and built a PostgreSQL database cluster with Citus and Patroni extensions for high availability. We manage both tools, as well as the entire virtualization platform. For automated maintenance of virtual machines, we use Ansible and Terraform, following Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.

Backup & Disaster Recovery in AWS

In Amazon Web Services (AWS), we prepared dedicated backup and disaster recovery sites. This allows Mediaboard to restore databases from S3 backups and quickly spin up the necessary servers as EC2 instances if needed.

Proxmox Cluster Architecture

At the core of Mediaboard’s infrastructure is the Proxmox virtualization platform, designed to scale with growing performance needs. Elasticsearch powers fast searches across the vast archive of media data, while the main database runs on PostgreSQL enhanced with Citus and Patroni. This setup distributes the database load across multiple servers, speeding up data processing.

High-demand VMs such as Elasticsearch and PostgreSQL use local NVMe storage with data replication to ensure high availability. Other VMs operate on Ceph storage, also in high availability mode. Infrastructure management is streamlined with Ansible and Terraform. The solution is also integrated with AWS, where backup locations are maintained.
