CUSTOMER STORY

MasterDC Makes Shopping On Rohlik More Convenient

Challenge

Due to the nature of the online supermarket’s services, a sizeable portion of Rohlik’s customers consists of seniors, visually impaired individuals, and other users with disabilities. For them, shopping for groceries from the comfort of their home is preferred over visiting physical stores, where they often require staff assistance – simply because they cannot locate products on the shelves or read information on labels and price tags.

So, to ensure these customers can navigate the mobile app as easily as others and shop comfortably from their homes, the code must be designed to meet accessibility standards. A survey conducted in mid-2023 also offered suggestions that could further enhance Rohlik’s app.

What We Achieved Together

01

Seamless App Navigation

In the original version, users with disabilities faced challenges navigating the app, especially when browsing the product list, e.g., it lacked alt text, which provides alternative descriptions for images that screen readers can read aloud. Additionally, there were semantic issues with the screen layout, making it difficult for visually impaired users to differentiate between plain text, headings, and subheadings. As a result, we worked together to improve these areas, ensuring the app is as accessible as possible for all users.

02

Easier Cart Navigation

Based on our consultations, we also designed a new gesture for adding items to the cart to speed up the shopping process. Users can now easily adjust the quantity of items with a simple, intuitive swipe up or down, which is especially useful when ordering small items.

03

Staying Ahead of the Competition

The previous version of Rohlik’s mobile app had shortcomings that made shopping more difficult. By implementing key accessibility principles and enhancing the developers’ expertise, we launched a version that now sets the benchmark for online grocery shopping apps.

04

Inspiring Developers

Through a series of tailored training sessions and consultations with our specialist Roman Kabelka, we not only improved the app’s accessibility but also reignited the important “accessibility first” philosophy – emphasising that an accessible app benefits all users, regardless of ability.

MasterDC’s Solution

Accessibility Analysis

Every project of this nature begins with an initial accessibility analysis, and Rohlik was no exception. Visually impaired auditors, led by Roman Kabelka, assessed the current state of the mobile app’s front end, specifically for iOS, and provided a detailed report.

Code Review

The next logical step after testing the app’s accessibility was to review the source code for the beta version. This review was conducted over several iterations.

Online Training

Rohlik also sought to raise awareness of accessibility guidelines within its team. As a result, the training sessions were open to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge. Feedback from participants indicated enthusiasm for how even minor changes in the code could lead to significant improvements in the app’s usability and overall user experience.

Tailored Consultation Series

The training sessions were followed by in-depth, individualised consultations with developers, focusing on solutions to specific issues while emphasising an “accessibility first” approach.
